MY HOUSE OF TARA WEEKEND
I went to the House of Tara Beauty Reps Conference full expecting to have fun but I wasn’t prepared for the kind of fun I had. I had the pleasure of meeting other reps from other parts of the country, lovely ladies, all of them!
I enjoyed being received by the HOTARA staff in VI and being welcomed at the Hotel with a very cold glass of juice while I checked in. (Did I mention the drive along the water front on the way to the hotel? Stuff that movies are made of!). House of Tara actually went to the trouble of meeting ad dropping people at the Airport. Nice one guys!
Got into my room for the weekend and I was transported to Lala land. But before I could really begin to savour my surroundings, TARA herself came to whisk us off to the Venivici Spa (wey I don see for magazine tire!)and she did it literally by driving us there. Now this was another experience altogether!!! Sauna, facials, massage, Manicure & pedicure!!!! You calculate the enjoyment level.
Back to the Hotel and it was dinner with more reps that had arrived. Oh, and the midnight cupcake treat. Thus I was royally set up to usher in my Birthday which was the next day.
Bright and early the next morning, I woke up to go watch the waves crash in and just take in the beauty of nature, then on to exercise and dance session. Everyone was so kind and generous with their birthday wishes; I could not but have a nice day
Then we had the etiquette class and was that something! Trying to make ladies out of us!! 5.25, 3.15... #wink# you would only understand those numbers if you attended the class. Needless to say, we spent the rest of our time during the weekend trying to catch each other on the wrong side of etiquette.

There was no shortage of Star power at the afternoon speed mentoring session with Omoni Iboli, Ufoma my mum and I, Aunty Adesua Onyenokwe, Mary Akpobome (Mama Ali, yes Ali Baba’s wife) and of course TARA herself! Do I need to say Cameras in all shapes, sizes and presentations worked overtime?
On to lunch and let me say that I will only mention the food we had during the period only once more so I get to talk about other things. Two words – PLENTY, NIIICE. Enough said. One more thing, Tee A came to dinner so you can imagine how hard we had to work at not choking on our food. This lady thing sef...
The session on customer relations and sales strategy are invaluable tools that will greatly affect my business. I came out of that session very inspired and with a new perspective to my business. I now know how to expand my clientele and increase my business. All those potential clients I had been letting slip away, I have net for you now!
The! Beach! Party! Was! Awesome!!! We ran about and played on the sand like real agbayas, all caution and ‘correctness’ thrown to the wind, horse back riding, relieved old days by playing ten-ten and building sad castles, competing with the waves, beach volley ball, and of course Dance.
The best part of the weekend for me was:
1. The ease with which we all flowed with one another even though the only thing most of us had in common was House of Tara;
2. The willingness and eagerness of the HOTARA staff of help us out; and
3. Getting a dream birthday holiday for myself without realising it when I was paying the Registration fees. I had food, guests and fun without lifting a finger! 2 for the price of one I’d say.
The things I’ve written here do not in any way properly convey the excitement, enjoyment, joy, fun and the beauty of that weekend!

We got goody bags and beautiful House of Tara T-Shirts; little souvenirs to remind us of our time in Lagos.

The International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 globally and by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited(DTTL) and its member firms to recognize the contributions of Deloitte women to the success of their local practices firms and the global Deloitte organization. This is the third consecutive year that DTTL and its member firms are celebrating this day. At the Akintola Williams Deloitte 2011 International Women’s Day forum, opening remarks were given by Mrs. Uche Erobu, Senior Partner, Akintola Williams Deloitte. “The aim of the day is to celebrate not only Deloitte women but also distinguished women outside Deloitte who continually strive for excellence and demonstrate leadership qualities that have made them successful role models in their careers and society.”

The event brought together all the female staff members and partners of Akintola Williams Deloitte in the Lagos office, including other invited guests, who took the opportunity to learn about what motivated these women to become successful in their chosen career. The speakers unanimously recognized that women are ‘multi-taskers,’ who continually strive to balance family, career and relationships.

Every speaker seemed to agree on these points: put God first in all that you set out to do, be determined to succeed against all odds, get the necessary qualifications that you need to advance your career or business, make time for life outside of work, and source for good hands to help with house chores or the children. They advised that employers should make the necessary effort to create flexible work time/ virtual office options for their staff members (especially for women). Women were also advised not to despise ‘small beginnings’ as they eventually result to incremental steps that lead to success after they have put in a period of hard-work, determination, passion, and relentlessness.

This series of events, Vital Voices’ Global Women’s Mentoring Walk Initiative, builds on the

MOTIVATING STAFF THROUGH TOUGH TIMES

Here are some inspiring words from a Friend and I believe it is apt that I share this with you, considering that we are in wonderful times. Enjoy!:
Many businesses are struggling during the current economic downturn and employees are becoming increasingly fearful of being laid off as their work hours are cut back and raises are put on hold. Without question, morale is shaky in this environment!

While money might have been the usual motivator, effective managers need to focus on alternative methods of motivating their staff. King Solomon gave us a key principle when he wrote, “A workers appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on” (Proverbs 16:26 NASB).

We need to understand the different appetites of our employees, and then endeavor to feed that appetite.

Genuine praise is a great motivator. Solomon wrote, “Like apples of gold in setting of silver is a word spoken in the right circumstances” (Proverbs 25:11 NASBN). Each person will bring different strengths to the job. Understand the strengths of each person and then look for examples of excellent work and offer genuine praise in response to that work.

A store manager noticed one clerk was exceptional at organizing the shelves and made a point of offering encouragement each time. Another clerk was a very good listener with customer’s questions and effectively offered solutions. The positive reinforcement to both of these clerks was a great motivator.

Praise should be specific. The more specific the praise, the more likely we are to get more of that great performance in the future. One store manager said to a clerk, “When that customer asked about a blood pressure measuring device, you asked several good qualifying questions, listened to the answers, and then offered two excellent choices at different price levels. I know the customer was pleased. Good job.”

Timely praise is also important. King Solomon said, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but the desire fulfilled is the tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12 NASB). A “thank you for straightening up the merchandise on the shelf” or a “you handled that very difficult, angry customer very well” is most effective if you say it right after it happened. The longer you wait, the less effective and less sincere the praise will be.

Create a variety of work. Another motivator for many employees is having a variety of tasks. Ask you staff to share their interests and desires. Find out what excites them.

A toy store owner learned that one of his employees had a keen interest in children’s books, so the owner gave the employee a crack at ordering several books she thought would be good sellers. The employee was excited to be part of the ordering process.

In another example, a sales assistant expressed interest in having direct contact with customers. The manager agreed to migrate several customer relationships to the assistant as a trial. The assistant enjoyed the new responsibilities and over time, was promoted as a sales associate.

Maintain your integrity. Solomon also taught, “He who speaks right is loved” (Proverbs 16:13 NASB). During difficult times we must maintain our integrity. When discussing how the business is doing with your employees, be honest. Your job is not to spread panic or malaise, but to bring in everyone as part of your solution. If staff hours need to be reduced, talk with your colleagues about the reality and ask them to work with you. Telling employees on Friday that no layoffs are planned, and then dismissing three people on Monday, will sap your credibility and the morale of your staff.

Be of good cheer. Nobody likes a sourpuss. Solomon observed, “A cheerful heart has a continual feast” (Proverbs 15:15 NASB). Regardless of how difficult and challenging our situation, we need to focus on keeping our attitude upbeat and professional. If we start dragging, everyone around us will start dragging.

Using non-monetary motivation techniques will be critical as we work through the current hard times. King Solomon said, “Good news puts fat on the bones” Proverbs 15:30 NASAB), so give prompt specific praise, communicate honestly, and keep your attitude positive. By doing so, you will be putting fat on the bones of others and keeping your business moving forward.

People keep saying that their Mascaras have dried up long before they have had time to enjoy it. Well, here is a way that work:

Avoid pumping air into the Mascara tube. Every time we try taking more Mascara on the applicator, we forcefully push in the applicator (or wand) back in the tube and this sends in air that gets trapped in the tube and this trapped air dries up our mascaras faster.

The ideal way to get ore Mascara on the wand is to twist the wand into the tube. this way, less air is trapped in.

Voila! Now you know.

DEAR DIARY:THE FORTUNE/U.S STATE DEPARTMENT MENTORING PROGRAM IV (The Concluding Part)

I started the day with a visit to the Paley Media centre where, we met the founder, Michelle Paley. She was for many years, an anchor woman for PBS. She introduced herself and gave a few of the women the opportunity to ask questions about the relevance of the media as emerging business leaders and how we can or have used this tool to promote our interest. Some of the ladies in the group had experience as either TV show hosts like Irene from Tanzania or Dudu from South Africa who is a regular columnist in the several leading magazines in her country. They were a few of us whose backgrounds did not permit them to speak to the press, the Lawyer from Ubizstan. There was an interesting question from Nana of Ghana on how to use the media other than through paid adverts.

A few things learnt, apart from taking great pictures and being inspired yet again by a powerful woman,

Explaining why the media is so expensive;she explained it’s a case of supply and demand.The number of media houses are limited as compared to the people who will like to be featured either on tv,radio or print. Everyone would like to be on TV and in the print media, but it’s not sufficient to meet everyone.As long as its not sufficient as we all know,a premium will always be asked for.

The much awaited visit to Google.

It started with a presentation on the best way to answer questions when you are being interviewed on television, what color and patterns would be suitable and the effect, the best way to respond to questions that tilt towards being controversial, the art of bridging and flagging and most of all, prepare what your message should be and how to ensure the message is re-enforced through out the interview, how to re-enforce and remember it’s your interview; you have the power to determine the turn out.

GOOGLE CAFETERIA

I see why its the best place to work.

OMG! The ambiance of the cafe has been famous for being colorful and friendly to enhance creativity with scooters,members bringing in their dogs to work. We were received by the Head of Media for Google and YouTube who had working a experience with a background in traditional media with Time Inc. ahead of joining Google. She was tall, good-looking, and stylish in her black attire and fit the profile of a Google employee I had imagined.

Prem, a program Director gave live tutorials on maximizing Google tools to make working easier. I learnt that you can generate survey reports and graphs using Google(hey i learnt something, document was done,edited and shared on goggle document), you type in English and it can be translated to all of the world’s most spoken languages with even a voice over(isn't that so cool!). The search engine and data sorting was one of the most amazing things I learnt. Google is truly making the world an easier place to live in with all the numerous solutions they proffer.

An interesting question was asked: why do we have access to these solutions for free? how does Google make money?-it is solely a platform for adverts,which is one of the ways revenue is generated some of these solutions are marketed at a larger scale to corporate organizations who use these solutions and have the capacity to pay more.

The day slowly came to an end with a photo-shoot with renowned photographer, Asa, who did portraits for all 32 mentees from 22countries.

The highlight of the day was the FORTUNE’S dinner in honor of the mentors and the mentees sponsored by KPMG, GAP INTERNATIONAL, and FORTUNE most powerful women summit. The Guest of honor was the governor and first lady of the state of New-York, Governor Patterson. Christiane Amanpour stole the show with the bee-hive of her international constituents taking pictures away with her, amongst other powerful women. The president of Hearst magazine the lovely,Cathie Black. The Hearst magazine owns the Cosmopolitan magazine,Harpers bazaar,Esquire and the O magazine. I got invited to see the O magazine office, I seized the moment by introducing myself what I do in the Nigeria as a business and also got invited to Essence Magazine.

The day drew to a halt with sad goodbyes from all our new global friends. We have committed to ‘Pay It Forward’ in our respective home countries but also to maintain this new relationships.

My last days in new york included a meeting with the publisher of the O magazine and a tour of the office including a peep into Oprah Winfrey mint green office,walked past the legendary Gayle King’s office.I learnt a lot yet again from a powerful woman how important it is to ask!

My memorable visit to Avon,the company for women!

Undoubtedly the most amazing time of my life!

Dear people,

Hope you had a nice weekend with all the holidays; children’s day
democracy day…hope it was fun.

I will continue with my diary in subsequent post. However it is pertinent
that I take time out and do this now. It is right to give kudos to
deserving people.

Years ago, House of Tara set up a business initiative to empower young
individuals to become financially independent. The business has been good
for the reps.

But this is not about House of Tara. It is for the reps that have stayed
with us over the years; One in particular.

This is for one of our reps whom we hold in esteem. She came on board in
2006, when we launched this financial empowerment program. And she has
always been constant.
She understood the principles of seed and bread.

Today, we are proud to present to you, Bunkunola Akinbinu.

We refer to her as a millionaire in the making,, however she chooses to
refer to herself as a tool. ‘It’s just God’ she always says.

Hi,
These are the pictures from by visit with The Lakewood Church. It is
truly a massive auditorium. The service was charged with a lot of positive
energy.

His wife Victoria is particularly gorgeous.

I got a chance to take a picture with him and got his new book signed as
well. Almost lost my cool after i asked a friend to stand in line for me
so I could get the book, on my return the protocol guys said I could not
switch places. The policy didn’t make sense! At this point the queue had
already been closed.
Knowing me, I NO GREE! I waited patiently to say 'My name is Tara and
I came from Nigeria. Can I get a picture and could you sign my book?’ and
of we course with a warm smile, he said, ‘of course’. And viola! Here is
my JOEL OSTEEN's PICTURE WITH TARA.

I will be in Dallas this Sunday. Hopefully, I will be getting you guys

Every meal served in Houston is overly-over sized, it’s unbelievable!
Consistently, I can never finish my food with entrées, desserts et al.
(you are saying tell me something new).Well I hear everything in Texas is
generally bigger.

On my way to work and being picked by a limooooooo! Exxon is taking good
care of me although I am getting tired of the long list of dinners in my

I am presently with my mentoring company, Exxon Mobil in Houston.

I am truthfully having the time of my life here in Houston. Had dinner
with my mentor last night we connected so well, it just flowed (she made
me laugh so much i cried at some point).Although she is a chemical engineer
she could have been an artist or a history or Latin professor. She is
excitable for a 52year old woman, so as you can imagine, she is loads of
fun.

She took me to this HIP restaurant called Alex Bistro owned by a 30+guy,
where discussed and exchanged personal information about family.

Houston doesn’t come across as a city that is or was going through a
recession. There are gorgeous gated communities, which I guess were
previous Ranches. With the entrance of a lot of Oil companies into Houston
many of the Ranches have been redeveloped to provide accommodation for the
new settlers.

I started my day at Exxon with a 30-minute with The President/C.E.O of the
Exxon chemical company which is one of the 8-business unit of the Exxon
Group. Steve Pryor ,a 62 year old man, a biologist by training but was
significant in the recruitment and integration of the Hispanic and African
American into the Company, He was very sweet, and paid very rapt
attention to my plan while at Exxon and gave some fine advise.
Took his time to show the gift that was given to him by the African American community he had worked with as a manager: copy of the slave emancipation act handwritten by Abraham Lincoln. It was something he was so proud of!

After meeting with Steve Pryor, a photo session was organized on my behalf
by their public affairs department, BDA; the lady who was taking the
pictures had never seen the President before or my mentor, so I guess this
is a rare privilege that I have been given! Amen? And the people say…

My Second meeting was with the Most senior female executive at Exxon
Chemical Company, Lynn Lachenmyer. I Spent a little time with my mentor
after an orientation program on the business structure of Exxon and strong
relevance of its chemical company in our everyday lives. You won’t believe
that chemicals for everything that are used for creating plastics,
cling-films, sweet wrappers, makeup, tires, clothing, diapers ,e.t.c are
from Exxon Upstream-Downstream businesses.

I Joined other staff at a YMCA shelter which is one of the numerous C.S.R
projects that my mentor chairs within the organization. I had to make a
small speech about my experience so far, dine with them and went to
Margret's massive house where we chatted a bit more. Saw her two cats,
she told me about her lessons in life as a mum, wife and as a leader in a
previous joint venture she was a part of prior to her movement to Exxon.

Hey guys! Long time no hear,right?so sorry ...was with the mentorship program and all...

Adetoun(another Nigerian nominee for the US state department mentor ship program)and I arrived at the United States of America to a welcome by a cab driver assigned to us from vital voices after such a long and seemingly endless trip.Detoun and I had to pretend we were on the phone as the cab driver insisted on telling us about his experience at an Ibo village, where he had escorted his then girlfriend to her Father's funeral. We arrived at Hotel Palomar to a lovely sunny day and very contemporary room, changed clothes and went downstairs to meet all the mentees from the 32 countries: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Thailand, Palestinian territories ,Russia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Tanzania, Argentina, Brazil and Haiti; All shining stars from their respective nations and doing incredible things for women empowerment.

We had a program introduction and review of program logistics. We had a
representative of the U.S state department, the President and CEO, Vital Voices and the Program coordinator.

I received a package from my mentoring company: a mobile phone, which was
special as no other mentee got one .We chatted, had dinner and went back to
our rooms to prepare for the next busy 4days of orientation.

Our orientation started with a State Department Leadership panel with
heavy tittles like the Assistant Secretary of state for verification,
compliance and implementation ,Director of Policy Planning, Ambassador at
large for global women¡¦s¡¦ issue; All women with qualifications and work
experience that would intimidate you to having goose bumps. They shared
their challenges as mothers and the changing conditions for women leaders
in the world today(no feminists in the room). When asked by one how they
balance work and family, she said, ¡¥you can¡¦t balance but keep joggling¡¦
Now, that for me, was an ¡¥Ahha!¡¦ moment. Interesting, ain't it?

Ann-Marie Slaughter particularly caught my attention with some of her
enlightening yet captivating views. They include:

„Ï ¡¥REMEMBER YOUR TEAM MEMBERS ARE WHOLE PEOPLE WITH SPIRIT,SOUL AND

Now, how is that for a start? I would call it inspiring, remarkable and
unforgettable. What would you call it?

We visited with more powerful women, went for a lecture at the prestigious
Georgetown university, had Lunch at Nora's, the first organic restaurant in
America, which was started by a woman 32years ago, networked with more
powerful women and learnt more, visited the first house (sorry didn't bump
into is Michelle).Had more posh dinners, hopefully i will have added weight
on mu returnƒº

The climax of the orientation program was the mentor and mentee dinner
organized by Fortune magazine and Fortunes Most Powerful Women's Summit at
the State department. Many of our mentors had never been to the state
department before that date, so it was a an opportunity that may never had
happened unless they had volunteered their time. Visited some Washington
Monuments took some more pictures...

okay,i don't know if i remembered to tell you...no, i did! i was at 'unmask' on the 21st of September at the Fountain of truth Assembly,Eric Moore, where I was privileged to speak along side other anointed ministers like E-Ben.Here, more light was shed upon discovering your true potential; stop hiding under the veil of social dictates and forget to manifest your God-given talent. this,event is one I hold there as I was privileged to have as my escort for the day, a charming young Man who is set to dazzle the World,positively that is!

DREAMS COME TRUE(IBADAN)
I was also at Ibadan in October for a live audience in Ibadan, tagged 'Dreams come true',put together by Jazzy-B.I met with young individuals who would take the Nation to victory if given the right sort of motivation. they were also encouraged instantly by the Commissioner for youth and sports(oyo).Tunde Kelani popularly referred to as TK,was also in attendance to motivate the Youth. I was delighted and most honoured to be invited to be in the culturally rich state of Akwa-Ibom, for the Etiquette and security seminar for Governor's wives and wives of Government Officials. Hi people! I'm so sorry about the un-avoidable absense but i'm back now ...

I would also like to apologise for the current look at our victoria Island office;
we are currently undergoing a renovation phase that would pass very soon...watch out for the new look of House of Tara International.

It was a site to behold...2 beautiful people making a decision to become 1, for better for worse... to brave the storm against all odds. July 31st, a day to remember for all eternity...

Back to earth guys, I just got starry-eyed there for a moment reminiscing about mine. But this story's not about me. It's about 2 beautiful people- my friends.
They decided to thigh the knot and make it official in the journey of life and yours truly was there with them all the way (both the wedding and the engagement party).

It was fun all the way... that is, you know, as in, in "fast"..."everytin evertin"...I mean it was beautiful, you needed to be there yourself to understand what I’m talking about.

You would have to agree with me that they are the perfect couple.

Steve and Immaculate I’m short of words to express my prayer for you…I wish you everything good.

Skin Care Analysis (Face)

I remember I promised to explain the basic skin combination and skin care regimen to you. Its time I fulfill that promise…
Basically, we can identify three skin types.

They are:
Dry skin
Normal/combination
Oily skin

SKIN TYPE FEATURES
Dry skin
This skin is common among older people. Characteristics of the Dry skin type are:
Flakiness
Fine lines
Roughness as a result of dryness
Minimal or no visibility of pores

Normal/combination Skin
Common features are:
Oiliness on the T-Zone areas
Occasional breakouts and blackheads on the T-Zone areas

Oily skin
Common features are:
Oiliness on the face shortly after bathing
Enlarged and visible pores
Constant breakouts, pimples, blackheads and blemishes

CARE
Have a beauty regimen.
The basic beauty regimen is:
*Cleansing *Exfoliating *Toning* Moisturizing.

CLEANSING means washing the face with a facial cleanser

EXFOLIATING means the removal of dead skin cells from the skin, with the use of a facial mask or scrub.

TONING is making the facial muscles firmer, with the use of an Astringent.

An astringent is a substance that draws tissue together.

MOISTURISING is applying cream to the face to prevent it from drying out.

Try this and you will enjoy a glowing complexion. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water as this helps to cleanse the body system.

Beauty Clinic with TFD- Ibadan

It was an honour last Saturday to be in the company of beautiful women in the ancient city of Ibadan. The beauty clinic, which had the objective of enhancing the beauty of women, is what I would call a success.

The event brought together, people from all works of life with different but interesting opinions on the ‘ideal’ makeup look.

One topic that really got us talking is the use of blushers by women of colour. So many women at the event were of the opinion that blushes are only to be used by the whites who need to add colour to their skin to make them beautiful. Truly, blushes could be used by anyone and everyone. Here’s the trick … the darker the skin colour, the darker the blush shade! So blush all you ladies.

I said it before and I’m gonna say it again: NEVER use a black pencil on your eye brow … except of course you are as dark as Alek Wek or our very own Baba Suwe and maybe a fashion show. The whole red… purple looking eyebrows are… abi?

I really had a nice time in Ibadan. Thank you peeps for making it happen. I have to run now but I promise to discuss skin type and their features in the next posting.

How To Prevent Breakout And Acne

Yeah! I know. Breakouts and acne are the worst nightmare of everyone; especially the ladies. Most times, we wonder: ‘how does a pimple form?’ Well, that’s an easy one to answer: clogged pores, oil and bacteria. Put these three in a mix and you have the perfect recipe for pimples.

The pore, which is the opening of the hair follicle, becomes clogged with dirt, oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria feed off the oil in the clogged pore and attract white blood cells to the area. Your body then responds to this inflammation causing the redness and swelling associated with pimples.

Females with active oil glands and large pores are also prone to breakouts and blackheads. Other causes of acne are stress, hormones, bad cosmetics, birth control pills and other medications.

The eternal question: ‘how do I get rid of them?’ well I have some few tips for you. You can stop the breakout cycle by attacking each element that contribute to breakouts and enjoy a clearer complexion.

It may sound too good to be true, but studies have shown that taking vitamin C orally helps in the prevention of acne. It helps to build immunity and infection. Vitamin E and Zinc are also good supplements that help preventing breakouts.
Over-the-counter products containing Benzoyl- peroxide is effective for fighting bacteria.

For clogged pores, Exfoliation is recommended.Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells that may clog the pores. This could be done by masking or scrubbing regularly.

It is also advisable to stick to one’s beauty regimen. A beauty regimen is a set of rules you stick to for a healthy, glowing complexion. The basic beauty regimen is: Cleansing-exfoliation-moisturize.

For most women, blemishes in areas other than the face are a major problem, from the chest and back, to the shoulders and beyond. Body acne can limit one’s wardrobe options and make one feel a tad insecure. Benzoyl- peroxide and Salicylic acid are also good. over-the-counter products like Neutrogena body scrub is effective in the treatment of body acne.

Although there so many wonderful products that could be used as a first line of defence in the prevention of breakouts, how do you know which one is best for you? Look out for my next post where i will explain the characteristics of various skin types.Some pimples cannot be treated through the use of cosmetics...they could be large in size, hard and very painful.This is the point I advise you to see a dermatologist 'cos most pimples have to be cleansed from within with the use of antibiotics before physical changes would be seen on the face.

Genevieve Pinkball - Stand Up To Cancer

Not another cancer gospel! Yeah right. I guess some people are getting tired of hearing about cancer in the news, in the papers…the truth is the importance of getting checked cannot be overemphasized. Many people are still in obscurity about the traumatising effect the dreaded cancer can have on lives (the diagnosed victims and their families). People may look at this and say, ‘cancer is hereditary, there’s no history of cancer on my family’ or ‘I live well and eat right. Surely I can’t have cancer’. Well, they are not-so-far-fetched misconceptions. Cancer knows no boundaries - not age, gender, location, religion or socio- economic status.

Just think about the many things that might cause the wear and tear that leads to abnormal cell growth—pollutants, hormones, pesticides, smoking, alcohol use, obesity, stress…. Or maybe your cells just made a mistake one day when they were making new genes to pass on to their baby cells. Perhaps there was a misprint in the genetic instruction manual that said switch growth on instead of off.

Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality (a “mistake” in the genetic material). However, only 5-10% of cancers are due to an abnormality inherited from your mother or father. About 90% of breast cancer is due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general.
While there are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible (such as eating a balanced diet, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly), breast cancer is never any one's fault. Feeling guilty, or telling yourself that breast cancer happened because of something you or anyone else did, is not productive.

A few weeks ago, my friends (Darey, Dakore, Funke, Ebun and Kingsley) and I decided to come together to say NO to breast cancer in the GENEVIEVE STAND UP TO CANCER PROJECT. Each of us has gone through our own ordeal with the scourge.

Personally, I lost my sister to cancer. she died two years into her marriage. As if our grieving was not enough, the dreaded scourge struck the second time...and the third. My mother went through the trauma over a period of two years,during which they had to carry out a mastectomy. My mother-in-law was also suffering at that time. They both died in the space of one month. In my opinion, it’s a ravenous disease worse than HIV that is plundering the human race.

I believe that when people like my friends and I come together and speak with one voice, then and only THEN, can the human race have a chance at kicking this harbinger of death and pain into extinction - hopefully in the nearest future.

How To Keep That Face Looking Good

Hi to all the Fashionistas out there! I know you are wondering how your face can retain its youthfulness and beauty every day.

It’s quite funny, the kind of blunders women make in trying to look beautiful. This, I believe would go a long way in correcting these errors.

Looking good they say, is good business. So here are some useful tips on how your face can remain youthful:

· Don’t apply fresh make on a stale one: oftentimes, ladies see it as time-taking, cleaning off the make-up they applied in the morning, and starting the whole process all over. The truth is so many layers of make-up cakes up the face and all your effort all day would have been wasted. The best bet is to clean the whole thing off and re-do it again. You could also do touch-up depending on how messy the make-up has become.

· Don’t use black pencils on your lips or Eyebrow: the natural colour or shade of the eyebrow and lip line is either dark brown or brown, depending on your skin colour or complexion. The black colour is too strong against the brown skin. If you are not as dark as Alek Wek or Baba Suwe, ‘don’t bother!’

· Don’t use powder puffs: this is what is commonly known as FOAM. The use of powder puff could probably cause break-out (pimples that is) as the powder could clog the face pores. So use a powder brush instead. Besides the foam holds bacteria; a powder brush can easily be washed unlike a puff.

· Use facial scrub: ensure that you use facial scrub. This helps to remove dead skin layers and open up the skin pores. The usage of the scrub varies (depending on your skin type). You could use a scrub once a week for dry skin types, three times for combination skin types and five times for oily skin types.

· Wash your face every night before going to bed. This would get rid of all the make- up and oil on your face; while asleep, the skin needs to be refreshed and the natural oils can give back to the skin while you are asleep.

Always remember- looking good is good business, so stay beautiful and be beautiful.

Taming Your Eyebrows

If you are having trouble taming your brows, here is a little trick: Take a toothbrush and spray with a little hair spray and then brush on brows. The stickiness of the hair spray will help keep them in place. Snipping instead of tweezing the brows might be all that is needed to control your brows. Here is how it is done. Brush brows straight up and then check for hairs that are too long. Snip any offending hair one at a time with a small pair of scissors. Brush brows downward and check again. Repeat the previous step, snipping any hair that seems to be too long. Brush brows into place and check for any hairs that still might need attention. Continue brushing and snipping until your brows can be brushed into place naturally.

NOTE: Maintaining your brows is something that should be done on a weekly basis instead of all in one day. Mistakes can be made that sometimes cannot be fixed.

Also, instead of pencil, use eye shadow to color your brows for a more natural look.
